• Material: Common options include:
  • Steel/Cast Iron: Offers high strength and durability for heavy-duty applications like cranes and industrial lifting. They can be forged and heat-treated for even greater strength.
  • Nylon/Polymer: Lighter than metal, nylon sheaves are known to extend wire rope life due to their elasticity, which distributes the load more evenly and reduces abrasion. They are also corrosion-resistant, making them suitable for marine or outdoor use.
• Sheave Diameter (D/d Ratio): The ratio of the sheave's pitch diameter to the wire rope's diameter is crucial for maximizing the rope's fatigue life. A larger ratio (e.g., a 22.5-inch sheave with a 3/4-inch rope yields a ratio of 30) significantly increases the expected lifespan of the wire rope compared to a smaller ratio (e.g., a 12-inch sheave with the same rope yields a ratio of 16).
